Ground Ivy has been used medicinally for centuries, and for the Angelo-Saxons it was valued as a flavoring, clarifier, and preservative for beer - thus the traditional name - alehoof. Ground ivy taken internally as a tea is a mild herb that can even be given to children for relief of congestion, flu symptoms, and for many ear, nose, throat and digestive complaints. It is also believed to be of benefit in cases of colic, diarrhea, scurvy, kidney and bladder disorders, tinnitus, cystitis, and as a general spring tonic and detoxifier. Externally, an oil or ointment can be made for topical use on hemorrhoids, skin inflammations and sores, and rheumatoid arthritis.
